Parish Records

Thanks to the persistence of one of our Research members, the Society has a complete set of registers from St. Mary's church.  The following are held by the Society:

  • Baptismal Register    1884 - 2003 (facsimile)
  • Marriage Register     1837 - 1978 (facsimile)
  • Burial Register         1868 - 2004 (facsimile)
  • Burial Register         1608 - 2004 (Chronological and Alphabetical Index)
  • East Ilsley Parish Registers, Transcriptions and Indexes, Baptism/ Marriage/ Burial 1608 - 2004

In addition, the Society has BFHS fiches PR/05 Transcripts and Indices, East Ilsley, Baptism 1608 - 1884, Marriages 1608 - 1836, Banns 1823 - 1866 and Burials 1608 - 1868.

Most of these entries are included in our database of Ilsley names, which can be searched for specific surnames or individuals. This database can be searched (free for members). If you are not a Member of the Local History Society, a search can be carried out for 2.50 (provided you can supply an e-mail address).

Poor Law records

This is an area under current research. Many of the records of the Old Poor Law (pre 1834) have survived for East Ilsley and are in the Berks Record Office. The first book of Overseers Accounts, covering the period 1744 to 1752, has already been transcribed and the names included in our database. There is an on-going project to transcribe the remaining books, covering 1753 to 1799.

These records are particularly valuable for the information they give about the poorest people in the village - the widows and orphans, labourers without sufficient work to feed their families etc. - the sort of people who leave very few other records of their life.

For example, Judith Ilsley (widow of Thomas Ilsley) received regular payments of 6 shillings per month up until her death in Sep 1748 and her funeral expenses were paid for out of the Poor Rate. During this period, she would have been in her late 60s.
