Sport and Leisure
We tend to take for granted the easy access to leisure activities that are possible nowadays, but in earlier times such activities were much more local. Despite the limited amount of free time available to the working man, there were quite a number of sports and leisure activities going on in the village. These included –
• Cricket
• Football
• General sports days
• Scout troop
• Brass band
• Annual show for flowers & vegetables
• Ploughing contests
• Working men’s club
• Dramatic society
• Concerts & variety shows
Much of the information we have on these activities come from reports in the local newspapers. For the more well to do residents there was also hunting and hare coursing on the Downs. More information on all of these topics will be added in due course.
